May 21, 2023

Established in 1784, they are the oldest manufacturing factory in the world, crafting beautiful, high quality garments that are designed to last, made in Britain and distributed the world over.

Comfortable and versatile, these designer men's polo shirt from John Smedley are expertly crafted from Anglo Indian Gauze - a fine blend of 54% Extra Fine Merino Wool and 46% John Smedley's Sea Island Cotton. In a short-sleeved style, they each feature a fashioned collar and a three-button placket.

Sustainability:

“When my Grandfather was born in 1901, the global population was 1.6 billion people, we emitted 2 billion tons of CO2 each year, and the average planetary temperature was hovering around the historic mean. Should I be blessed with a Granddaughter of my own, she may be born on or around 2033. At that time, the global population will be c. 8.5 billion people, we don’t know how many tons of CO2 we will be emitting, and the average planetary temperature could be rising beyond 1.5 degrees C above the historic mean. While there are of course many positive legacies resulting from industrialisation, the relentlessl rising emissions of CO2 and the unintended consequences of this will be our greatest negative legacy. The UN Climate Change Commission is telling us that the planet is on fire, and they are right. We need to put that fire out fast.”

As the Creative Design team have control over the product specification, they can incorporate sustainability criteria in concept development and design stages. The team are already working on best practice derived from London College of Fashion and Kering knowledge.

Recommendations that we are working on:

  • Reducing the volume of paper and plastic packaging.
  • Reducing waste yarn in the knitting process.
  • Assessing sustainability of alternative packaging materials to plastic.
  • Using tissue paper tickets and cardboard made from only FSC certified forests.
  • Considering the incorporating paper or cardboard recyclate in packaging.
